Do you have the time?
Osamu wanted to relax in Hawaii so he wore casual clothes. He didn't have a watch but he wanted to know the time. He wanted to ask someone for the time but he didn't know what to ask. He wondered what to do and he didn't know what to do so he just ignored the time and did his own thing.
のんびりとくつろぐハワイの滞在では、軽装の上に腕時計を外して外出することがよくあります。たまに時間が気になり、さて、街中に時計を探すのですが、なかなか見あたりません。近くの人に時間を尋ねる時になって、余計な英語の知識が頭をかすめました。尋ね方によっては「あなた、お暇？」などと失礼な意味合いになります。あれやこれや思い巡らしているうちに訳が分からなくなり、時間を無視したのんびりハワイ生活に戻ることにしました。
英語では時として the の存在が大きな意味の違いをもたらします。 Do you have the time? と言った場合は、 What time is it now? と同じで、「今何時ですか？」ということを意味します。 Do you have time のように the を取った場合には、 do you have free time? Are you available? と同じ意味になり、あなたが心配なさった意味合いを含むことになります。ちなみに、Do you have a time? という表現は、いわゆるブロークン・イングリッシュです。 a と time の間に、楽しい（fun）とか、退屈な（boring）といった言葉が必要です。しかし、こんな面倒な英語の文法事項にこだわらず、アメリカ人との爽やかなコミュニケーションを楽しんで下さい。あなたの人柄から、あなたのおっしゃりたいことを察してくれるものと思います。
