Excuse me, where's the rest room?
If Americans are in a home, they will say “Where’s the bathroom?” If they are in a department store, they will use the word “rest room, ladies room or men’s room.” If they are with friends they will sometimes say: “I’m going to the little girl’s room.” Japanese often use the word “toilet.” When Americans hear that, they feel sort of strange. Their feeling might be the same as when someone asks a Japanese person where the “benjo” is. It’s a little bit crude. WC is a term used in England. And “lavatory” can be used but is mostly used by older people. In a department store, you can ask the salespeople where the restroom is. They will tell you something like this: It’s on the 4th floor next to the houseware department. or It’s over there behind the men’s department. Usually, they will not take you because they have to stay in their area.百貨店で家内からトイレ（toilet) のありかを尋ねてくれと頼まれました。トイレを rest room ということは知っています。しかし、いざ誰かに尋ねる段になるとハタと困ってしまいました。rest roomでは、頭の中にどうしてもゆったりとくつろいだ休息所が浮かんできます。一刻を争う緊急事態にどうも変です。結局、店内を走り回る次第となり、家内に対しては面目を失う結果となりました。
トイレについて、アメリカでも年齢、地域、社会階層、あるいは個々の家庭によって、色々な表現が存在します。トイレに関する言葉について、私のイメージをお伝えしましょう。まず、toilet という言葉は滅多に使いません。粗雑で洗練されない感じがするからです。むしろ便器そのものを連想します。トイレの修理を頼む時などに使うくらいでしょう。bath room は家の中でトイレを尋ねる時に使います。lavatry は、飛行機、汽車、船の中など。WC(water closet) はどこか古くさく、一般的な表現ではないと感じます。やはり、rest room／ladies(men’s) room がどこでも使える適当な表現ではないかと思います。自信を持って使ってみて下さい。

Excuse me, where’s the rest room?
Can you tell me where the rest room is?
Could you please tell me where the rest room is?
