お風呂

　２００２年、１１月、２週間、日本語の腕前を磨くことと、日本の友人達を訪ねるために、日本へ行きました。日本を旅行している間、私は多くの人達に会い、たくさんの新しい経験をしました。

　一つの新しい経験は、お風呂（日本式）でした。お風呂は、アメリカ式の浴室とはずいぶん違っていました。それは、浴室、ただ浴室だけでした。トイレはありません。浴槽とシャワー（浴槽の反対側にありました。）があるだけでした。浴室の床の真ん中には排水溝があり、普通、そこには、小さな腰掛けが置いてあります。お風呂に入るには、まず、浴槽の外で、身体を石鹸でよく洗い、シャワーで流します。家族全員が同じお風呂のお湯を使うので、浴槽に入る前に身体がきれいになっているか確かめなければならないのです。

　問題は、浴槽に入るのに、私の身体が、十分、きれいになったのか全然わからなかったことです。私は身体をゴシゴシこすっては洗い流し、そして、浴槽のお湯を見つめて、「たぶん、もう一回、シャワーを浴びた方がいいかな・・・」と考えました。私はこれを、毎日、何度も何度もしました。しかし、私はただの一度も浴槽に入らなかったのです。たぶん、次の時には・・・

In order to help improve my Japanese language skill and visit some friends, in November of 2002 I went to Japan for two weeks. During my trip to Japan I meet many people and had many new experiences. One new experience was the ofuro (Japanese style bathroom). An ofuro is very different from an American style bathroom. It is a bathroom and bathroom only. There is no toliet in the room. Just a bathtub and a shower nozzle (which is on the opposite side of the bathtub). (There is just a bathtub on one side of the room and a shower nozzle on the other side.). There is a drain in the middle of the floor and usually a stool to sit on. To use the ofuro first you soap up and shower off outside the tub. The whole family uses the same bath water, so you have to make sure you're clean before you get in the tub. The problem I had was I never knew when I was clean enough to get in the tub. I would srub and scrub, rinse off and then look at the water in the tub and think, "Maybe I should take another shower". I did this over and over everyday. But never once did I get in the tub. Maybe next time.

少し変な人でしたね。ね？　ね！

最近、私は佐世保に行きました。佐世保は長崎の近くにある小さな町です。とても小さな町なので人々は大変親しみやすいです。

　そこでお祭りに行った時のことです。立ってお祭りの催しを見ていると、ある日本人男性が私のところに近づいて、話しかけてきました。私は彼の言っていることがいくらか分かったので応答すると、彼はとても興奮して、ものすごく早くしゃべり始めたのでした。実際、あまりに早すぎて、彼が、他のまったく違う話題を話す前に、彼の言っていることが、一言か二言、わかるだけでした。

　彼は、私が「はい」と答えない限り、すべての話題の終わりに、「ね？」と、何度も何度も繰り返し言うのでした。彼は、しばらくお祭りのことを話したかと思うと、ジャッキーチェーンの話になり、そして、どこからともなくビールの話をするのでした。これが３０分も続きました。そして、話題と話題の間で、ずっと、彼は、「ね？　ね？　ね？　ね？」と言っていたのでした。

　ついに私は、彼が言っていることを完全にわかろうとするのをあきらめて、ただ、「はい！」とだけ言うことにしました。

私を困惑させたのは、はじめの日本人男性が私に話しかけているうちに、かたわらに立っていた他の日本人たちまでが、彼の言っていることに、さらに何かをつけ加えることでした。そして彼らが話し終えると、最初の男性は、「ね？　ね？　ね？」と言うのでした。それから、急にカバンの中に持っている、おもちゃのガンダムモデルをのぞきはじめ、あまり話さなくなるのでした。

Recently I went to Sasebo Japan. Sasebo is a small town near Nagasaki. Since it's such a small town, people there are very friendly. While there, I went to a festival. I was standing there watching the events when a Japanese man came up to me and began speaking. I understood some of what he said so I spoke back to him. He became very excited and began speaking extremely fast. So fast, in fact, that I could only catch a word or two of what he was saying before he was talking about something completely different. At the end of every subject he would say "Ne?" (isn't it) over and over again until I would respond with "hai" (yes). One minute he was talking about the festival, then Jackie Chan, and out of nowhere he was talking about beer. This went on for about a half an hour. And all the while between subjects he would say "Ne? Ne? Ne? Ne?". Finally I would give up trying to understand what exactly he was saying and just say "Hai". To add to my confusion; while the first Japanese man was talking to me, other Japanese people who were standing nearby would also add something on top of what he was saying. And after they had finished, the first Japanese man would say "Ne? Ne? Ne?". Then as quickly as the converstation had started the man began looking at a Gundam model that he had in his bag and didn't say much after that.

鎌倉へ行きたいのですが。

　日本に旅行した時のことです。数人の友人と鎌倉に行きたくなりました。私達は横須賀にいて、鎌倉へは電車でほんの短い旅でした。

　以前、日本に旅行した時、横須賀から電車に乗ったことがあったのですが、その時にどうやって駅へ行ったのか思い出すことができませんでした。少しだけ日本語を知っていたのですが、本で学んだことしか知りませんでした。

　たいていの横須賀の人達は英語を話すので、とにかく方角を尋ねることにしました。人がいるのを見かけた最初のお店に入って、カウンターで、鎌倉に行く電車の駅への行き方を英語で尋ねました。

　カウンターのむこうにいた女性は首を横に振って、「英語がわかりません」と言いました。それで私はちょっと考えて、今度は日本語で尋ねました。私達は駅にどうやって行けばよいか尋ねようとしていたところでしたので、その女性に話すのがちょうどいいと考えました。

　それで私は、「私達は鎌倉に行きましょう。」と言いました。するとその女性は、顔を赤らめ、手を顔に当てて、「何ですか」と言ったのです。

　その時、私は、「鎌倉に行きたいんです」と言ったのではなく、「いっしょに鎌倉に行きましょう」と言ってしまったことに気がつきました。

　私は、結局、ブロークンの日本語で私の本当に言いたかったことを説明することになりました。彼女は吹き出しました。彼女は半分日本語、半分ジェスチャーで行き方を教えてくれたのでした。

On one of my trips to Japan, some friends and I wanted to visit Kamakura. We were in Yokosuka which is only a short trip, by train, to Kamamkura. I had taken the train from Yokosuka on previous trips to Japan, but at that time, I couldn't remember how to get to the station. I knew very little Japanese - only what I had learned from books. I decided to ask for directions, since most people in Yokosuka speak English. I went into the first store, saw people inside, walked up to the counter and asked in English how to get to the train station that goes to Kamakura. The woman behind the counter shook her head and said, “Eigo ga wakarimasen” (I don't understand English). So, I thought for a second and tried to ask in Japanese. I thought it best to tell her where my friends and I were trying to go then ask for directions to the station. So I said “Watashitachi wa Kamakura ni ikimashoo”. The woman turned red, put her hands on her face and said “Nan desu ka!” (What!). That's when I realized I had not said, “We're trying to go to Kamakura” but actually “Let's go to Kamakura.” I eventually, explained in broken Japanese what I really meant and she laughed. She gave me directions partly in Japanese and partly in charades.
